May 1, Our First Hike

7:54 pm that's life, baby

May 1 used to be a very special day when I was a child. We used to go to Main Street, where there was a big parade with brass band, majorettes and people carrying placards with well-known names and slogans. We cheered them as they passed by with colorful roll-out paper flowers on sticks (I can’t think of a better way to describe them).

Much has changed since then, obviously. But in a way May 1 will remain our special day — the day we went on our first hike with kids. And to our surprise, they actually did really well. We hiked up to the top of the Zadiel Canyon. Then hid in some sort of animal shelter when the rain began, and continued down the hill after it stopped.

The way down was a real endurance test. Les did really great though. As for Ninka, she was very tired by that time and the slope was quite steep. The moment I picked her up she fell asleep and only woke up when we got back to the cars.

So all in all, a great day. A great day with our friends and their kids. Our first hike was a success. And hopefully there will be many others to follow.
