Extremism Doesn’t Pay… Either Way

just reminiscing No Comments

Some people really freak out when they hear of cases like this one, where parents (who happen to be Jehovah’s Witnesses) tried to prevent doctors from giving their little girl an infusion to save her life, or another one (and yet another), where parents preferred prayer over medical treatment and thus caused their child to die. And, to be completely honest, I am appalled by such cases too. But I fear there might be too many who think Christianity is to blame.

Then, interestingly enough, the same people who are constantly finding fault with Christianity are perfectly OK supporting abortions. To them, this a ”moral choice” and a “responsible” one, too (even though it follows an irresponsible action), as if the killing of an unborn baby was a totally different issue. You know - as if the baby had never been alive!

As a Christian, I think our life is one of the most precious gifts from God. And I believe in the power of prayer. But I also believe, God doesn’t need to work miracles if he’s already provided us with a different way of solving the problem (e.g. developments in medicine), which we prefer to overlook. So, don’t blame God; blame people.

At the same time, I think abortionists got it wrong too. They kill when there’s no (objective) reason to kill. But I wonder how many of these great pro-choice minds (and mouths) wouldn’t mind if their parents (or mothers, at least) had aborted them. (Now, that’s a thinker.) And I wonder what the world would look like now, with all the “friends of abortion” forever faded into oblivion.

Happy Birthday

just reminiscing No Comments

Today is a very special day. Yes, February 29 (unlike Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Thanksgiving turkey) only comes once in four years. And believe it or not, it’s the day my great-grandmother was born. So this post here is to say happy birthday. Not that my great-grandmother speaks English. Or that she is still alive. But she was a wonderful woman and I have many great memories of the times we spent the summer at her house. And today she would be celebrating her 24th actual birthday. That’s 4 less than I’ve had so far. And that calls for more good, classical stuff: “I love Lucy” (which is also true of me).

Some Old Photos

just reminiscing No Comments

We had lunch at my mom’s a couple weeks ago and we came across some old photos. And you know how fascinating rediscovering your past can be - we laughed a lot. And I’m sure you will too when you see these. TIP: Try identifying the people/events in the picture before you read the comments below.

My friend Mato Alter and myself (right) performing a skit at Kalamajky, an annual event at my Slovak high school. I loved the costume. Would wear it to school anytime.

This is me with my (back then) girlfriend Lucia at some sort of fancy occasion (as you cannot tell from the way we’re dressed). For those of you who don’t know, I am married to this (now a little less red-haired) special person.

My 18th birthday. Pictured from left to right: my mom, sister (who will probably kill me after seeing this), myself and my brother (who will probably mess up the scripts on this site after seeing this). My sister Slavka looks remarkably similar to what my older daughter Les looks like now (aged 4, as Slavka was then).

The three beautiful girls in this picture are Carolyn, Toni and me. (I am not actually a girl, for those of you who don’t know and don’t find it obvious from Picture 1).

With the long hair and a fancy Skoda 105S, I was a real babe magnet at the age of 19 (or so). Now seriously, the only girls I ever drove anywhere at the time were Ivana and Vittoria, my college “buddies”. I drove us all to our (not so) beloved Presov University.

Well, that’s all I have so far. But as I find looking through old photos very inspirational, I might do it some time again. Until then, you just enjoy these.

TIP: For those of you who are not very creative, here’s a few tips on how to enjoy the pics: you can print them out and cut out the people, or just their heads, and make finger puppets; you can click on them to see the full size pics, print those out and play darts (if you don’t really like me much or don’t have a dartboard); you can draw a bunch of hearts in bold red ink next to me (if you really like me or want somebody to believe that you do); or you can have friends over to laugh together at the pictures of your former/current (choose which one applies) teacher.

Talk About Absurd!

books, CDs, DVDs, just reminiscing No Comments

Just now we’ve started watching Harold and Maude (1971) on TV. A black comedy, if you will. Brilliantly absurd. And anyone these days will appreciate the music as well as the costumes.

More good news today includes one baby, born to our friends in Prague (congrats, you guys), and a meeting with my long-lost cousin. So that makes this day a red-letter day in my diary (if I kept one). Hope yours rocked too. And if not, you still have a chance.

Officially 28

just reminiscing No Comments

So I’m officially 28 now! Some 14 years ago I thought that certain things were just a phase. Now I’m discovering they might be here to stay. So I’d better make my peace with them.

I’m hyperactive. I might be tired at times, but once I get a little rest, I tend to come up with endless lists of things I’d like to do and/or organize. I get excited about things easily, especially the ones that I’ve planned to do. I am willing to sacrifice a lot of my time and effort to make these projects work. And more than anything else, I’m optimistic and unwilling to put on a pessimistic facade when I can’t stop those little sparkles of hope inside me from lighting up the inside of my soul. I’m still just a birthday boy and I wonder if I ever grow up to be a birthday man.
